Birding For All: Joyner Park
Join Wake Audubon for birding for all at the 117-acre E Carroll Joyner Park, on *SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2024* from 8:00 to about 10:00 a.m.

All parts of the birding outing will be on paved surfaces without stairs or steep inclines, thus anyone needing wheels or walkers to move around can join us. Handicapped restrooms available.

Leader is Erla Beegle ([email protected] or 919-673-6136). I drive a white 2020 Subaru Forester, license plate 0PTMYSTC. Meet in the main parking lot near the kiosk that looks like a miniature covered bridge.

The address is 701 Harris Road, Wake Forest (one mile east of Capital Boulevard and three miles north of 98/Capital interchange). Turn right (east) on Harris and follow Harris Road for about a half-mile and the park appears on your right. The first entrance is for the community center; continue to the main (second) entrance, which has a large sign.

The park has paved trails and this is a handicapped -accessible outing. The outing is welcome to everyone. Accessible restroom near parking lot. The park is open dawn to dusk so you can arrive earlier than 8 am

Topic: Demystifying Bats by Olivia Munzer, NCWRC. Olivia Munzer is the Western Piedmont Habitat Conservation Coordinator at North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission based in Raleigh, North Carolina. She will include some cultural/history info, importance of bats as pollinators and for insect control, and discuss some myths concerning "spooky bats". She will dispel these myths and delve into the amazing world of bats. She will discuss how bats are tied closely to the State’s history, techniques we use to study bats, and what we all can do to conserve these amazing creatures.

Park (for free after 6:30 pm) and walk to the main museum entrance on Jones Street, just to the right of the giant globe. Since the NCSM is closed at night, someone will be at the door ONLY from 7 to 7:45 to let you in, so be on time. Take the elevator to the fourth floor meeting room. The east-facing entrance to the "old wing" of the museum will not be used. If you feel unwell, please stay home and enjoy our presentation over Zoom.

Grab your binoculars and meet us at beautiful Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve for a bird-watching hike led by Wake Audubon guest naturalist, Lynn Erla Beegle. Spend your morning watching and learning about birds that prefer  grasslands and forest edges on this approximately 1.5 mile hike. For beginning and advanced birders. Bring your binoculars, or borrow a pair of ours. Pre-registration is required. Registration might be limited to City of Raleigh residents.

Meet a few minutes before 8 am in the parking lot of Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve on Horse Shoe Farm Road (meet near the bulletin board kiosk overlooking the main meadow).

Calling everyone curious about birding, but not sure where to begin?

Come join our next Beginner Birders workshop. This free public program teaches the basics of bird identification; how to use binoculars, guides and phone apps; types of bird safety and ways to bird safely; and the importance of inclusion and allyship in birding and the outdoors. We’ll spend time outside putting your learning to quick use.

Recommended minimum age is 13.

No binoculars? No problem! We have plenty of loaners to spare.

In celebration of Birdability week we’re hosting a bird outing on accessible mobility-friendly trails. All trails we use will be accessible with ramps, pavement or boardwalks, no stairs, no steep inclines.
Restrooms on site. A quick tour of the Walnut Creek Wetland Center is available after the bird outing.

Free Bird Outing with Wake Audubon at Hilltop-Needmore Park NORTH

Come join Wake Audubon for a summer morning bird walk on the North Trail.  The walk is leisurely with frequent stops for birds. There are elevation changes but we often stop to enjoy birds. Please wear shoes for walking on a dew covered grassy fairway. Anyone 6 years and up are welcome to join us!

Join Wake Audubon for a Bird Outing at Bass Lake on Sunday, OCTOBER 27, 2024,  8:15 
The park opens at 8 am. The address is 900 Bass Lake Road, Holly Springs, NC (note that this is the main parking lot, not the smaller lot on another road). Meet on the trail near the restrooms. This  2+ mile walk on unpaved trails begins at 8:15 and ends by 10:30. 
**This outing is on soft trails. We might cover the east side of the lake and walk to the adjacent Sugg Farm.
